Mauer Park Poem

Kyla Mayoree

a man in a teal blue shirt strums on his guitar in the park

dozens of people sit, lay, listen to him

wind blowing through my hair and the sun on my face

i’m sitting at the top of a hill in Mauerpark, Berlin

i can see the buildings in red and yellow and blue

a pin tower we’ve been trying to get to for days taunting us in the distance

the closer we get to it the farther away it goes

but it’s peaceful up here

dogs taking leisurely walks

people barbecuing and smoking

loving and cuddling on the grass

alone and laying on the grass

“it’s vibey up here” says the stranger i came to Berlin with

and he’s right

as he points out what he calls a tiny puffy Pomeranian

he keeps an eye out for all the cute little dogs we come across here

i close my eyes and for a second

with the wind in my hair

and the sun burning my feet and face

the man whistling a personal song of his

a kid screaming behind me as he yells German words of excitement

a violin in the distance

the smell of weed all around

a man laying on his backpack with his skateboard sunbathing next to him

it’s warm

and it’s windy

and it’s vibey

and i’m surrounded by strangers

and i feel so at home.
